What Omega-3 Bioavailability Means

Bioavailability is the proportion of a nutrient that is absorbed from food and made available for physiological use. A dog food that lists 1.8% omega-3 on the guaranteed analysis is not delivering 1.8% omega-3 to every cell that needs it. It is delivering a percentage of that figure — determined by the form of the fatty acid, its oxidative state at the time of consumption, and the dog’s individual digestive capacity. The gap between the stated value and the absorbed value is what bioavailability describes. For omega-3 fatty acids specifically, this gap is wider than for most other nutrients, because EPA and DHA are chemically unstable and degrade at multiple points between manufacturing and consumption.

Oxidation: The Bioavailability Problem That Isn’t on the Label

The guaranteed analysis on a dog food bag reflects the omega-3 content at time of production testing. It does not reflect oxidative state at time of purchase, or at time of feeding. Lipid peroxidation is measurable — via peroxide value (PV) and thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) — but these values are not disclosed on consumer labels anywhere in the industry.

The practical implication: two products with identical omega-3 minimums on the guaranteed analysis can deliver substantially different amounts of functional EPA and DHA to the dog consuming them, depending entirely on how those fatty acids were treated during and after processing.

It does not represent the proportion your dog absorbs, does not separate EPA and DHA from ALA, does not account for shelf-life oxidation, and does not distinguish between omega-3 in a chemically stable versus a degraded state.
